My Atlas of Beauty

Growing into a mature woman (mature in mind not in age… just putting that out there). I feel much more confident about my own beauty, my own flaws & my own individual features. With this I’ve also grown to admire & appreciate beauty in other women. As a child I grew up in a very Caucasian based school & I always wanted the blonde barbies, the white baby dolls & I longed for smooth, straight, thin hair like my little Caucasian friends. This went on pretty much all the way through high school too & it wasn’t until my college years that I started to embrace my thick curly hair & the fact that being ethnic is pretty damn cool.

About 4 years ago I discovered Pinterest & as soon as I got my head around it I created my Goddess Board & it quickly became & remains my favourite. It celebrates, through other people’s photography, the beauty & ethnicity of women from all around the world. Ethnic, Caucasian, tribal, big, small, bald, old, young whatever it is. I just think they are all beautiful in their own ways. They come from many walks of life, whether it be quite a regular life like mine or yours to being animal herders, Eskimos or field workers. They go about their daily lives not knowing the beauty that they hold & I just find it so refreshing to look at these naturally beautiful women from the around the world who, sadly, go unnoticed behind the leggy models, the lip fillers & the bum implants.

Earlier in the year, my sister told me to check out Mihaela Noroc’s (below) Atlas of beauty. I was so excited to see the project  when she explained what it was & my expectations were not let down. Mihaela is a female photographer from Romania & in 2014 she visited 37 countries photographing the native women. The result is a stunning collection of photographs that express the diversity & ethnicity of people. It’s such a fantastic idea (great minds do think alike after all) & I cannot imagine the amazing experience & encounters she must have had along the way.

Plenty of Fish?

The world of online dating is still quite new to me & as old fashioned as I am, I find it quite bizarre. After becoming single a few months ago from a long term relationship, one of my girlfriends asked me where I thought I might meet the man of my dreams. Being slightly more romantic than is probably realistic, I explained that I was sure while I was out taking pictures of local architecture, we would bump into each other in the street, lock eyes, & on apology instantly fall in love.... I know, I know only in the movies right. She told me to get a grip and join Plenty of Fish.

Personally, I feel like online dating is one of those places for lonely weirdos that can’t get a date in real life; but the reality is that everyone & I literally mean EVERYONE does it. While I’ve been settled in a relationship for the past 5 years it’s become the norm & it’s the new place to meet your Friday night meal ticket & your husband apparently. I personally don’t cherish the idea of telling my children one day that “Mummy met Daddy online” where’s the romance & the butterflies!?

Anyway, to give you a little taster of what my online dating profile has brought to me, I thought I would share with you, some of the best (meaning best of the worst) opening lines that have been fired my way in hopes of scoring a first date... or as it seems a bit of sexting.

Sunday Supermarket Facial - With Waitrose

When my friend Kayleigh came into work raving about the new Waitrose skincare range ‘Pure’ I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try it. When it comes to my skincare range I find I can quite easily use anything on my face. I’m very lucky that my skin isn’t sensitive or irritable and I’m no snob to own/lower branded products. So after a girl’s night out and sleepover at Kayleigh’s I hastily made a visit to her local Waitrose on the way home to scope out the goodies.

So, what’s the idea behind the Pure range?
“The new Waitrose Pure skincare range uses more than 95% naturally derived ingredients (such as camomile, sweet almond oil and shea butter), is fragrance free, vegan friendly, dermatologically approved and kind to sensitive skin. Natural oils and plant extracts nourish, moisturise, sooth and protect all skin types to leave you with a refreshed and radiant complexion.” – Waitrose

To my surprise I was even happier when I got there to find that not only were the products only £2.99 each but they were on 3 for 2… love them already.

There were a fair few products in the range to choose from including facial wipes, hand creams & cleansers; after a good look I came away with the Face Polish, Eye Gel & beauty balm.

Budget Brushes

Just before Christmas I’d been looking for a birthday present for my sister & seen as I’d had my eye on the BH Cosmetics sculpt & blend brush set for myself, (I already have their 10Pc Eco brush set and I love it!) I thought while I was there I might as well get a set for my sister too; because she’d been wanting to experiment more with brushes. Typically though, every time I went to place my order the brushes were sold out. They had a tonne of really good reviews & I was dying to get my mitts on them. They came back in stock & sold out again & again (I just wasn’t quick enough) before I knew it, it was too late to buy them because they’d never make here in time from the US, so I set out in search of something else. While browsing online I came across this 10 Piece make brush set which, if you ask me is identical to the Sculpt & Blend set minus the BH cosmetics stamp & was only £7.49 despatched & delivered in the UK yes you read that right…. PURCHASE…. X2!

Workout Playlist

WORKOUT PLAYLIST

OK so as I mentioned in my previous post, I’m on board with the Tone It Up Love Your Body 6 week fitness challenge & today, as requested by Katrina & Karena, I did a 5K run on the treadmill for the first time in my whole life! It took me almost an hour (48:58) at running & walking speeds. Snail’s pace I know, but I did it & I’m proud & hopefully by the end of the 6 weeks my time will have improved; I’ll keep you posted,

Apart from water & oxygen, there is one vital thing that keeps me going during times like this, Music. I need it. The playlists they play generally at the gym can be a little bleak & don’t really help to give me that extra bit of oomph that I need, so I thought I would share with you some of the songs that my little ipod threw at me today that gave me that eye of the tiger and to get me through my 5K.

Some of them are older, some of them are newer, some you may know & some you may not, either way follow the album covers through to YouTube, turn up the volume & burn some calories on me.

Hello 2015

Image from www.toneitup.com

I love that exciting and promising feeling that overcomes you on January 1st. It’s a brand new year, anything is possible, you can turn your life around and make a fresh starts in every aspect of your life if you want. Until January 7th comes and you quickly give up on all those positive resolutions and slip back into your regular routine of working 9-5, eating junk food and staying home at weekends.

Feeling optimistic I won’t be making resolutions this year, because let’s be honest, as much as I would like too I’m not going to cure world hunger, and end all conflicts whilst losing a stone and getting my dream bod - unfortunately. So I’m going to be making goals for myself instead which I think will be easier to reach.

I have 2 main goals to reach this year both which have been considered, planned & failed since probably about 2010 and I’m very proud to say that we are on January 2nd and I’ve already made  good start with both of them.

Read more on my goals for 2015 and how this year, I will be sticking with them and how you can to yours too at the full Live Lotus blog
